I used to work in an African country called Senegal for a few years. Before getting there, I used to think it was a very poor place and the people were rude However, one thing changed my idea when I began to stay there.
One day, my translator(翻译)and I went to a nearby farm to buy cucumbers and tomatoes. At home, every day I ate some of them to stay healthy.
There the vegetables were sold in piles. A pile had four to five cucumbers or five to six tomatoes. Each pile cost the same:1, 500 African francs(about 20 yuan). I shook my head at once and said, “Your vegetables aren't so great. They cost at most 750 African francs.”
The translator told the farmer what I had said Unexpectedly, he got angry and shouted, “I can't reduce the price to sell it to you. Be quick to get out of here.”We had to leave there. Later, we learned in Senegal bargaining(讨价还价)was thought to be not too friendly there.
With experience, we smiled to the farmer of another farm and praised how nice his vegetables were Ho smiled back but wanted 1 600 African francs for each pile. We agreed and bought three piles of cucumbers and five piles of tomatoes.
The farmer quickly helped me to put the vegetables onto our truck, While I was leaving, he suddenly took my hand into the field A few minutes later, he picked up a full bag of cucumbers and tomatoes which were big and nice. Then he said. "These are all free to you. They are fresher than those I sold you just now.”
When we got back, I found the farmer had sent us 16 cucumbers and 25 tomatoes. At that time, I just understood in Senegal people would never sell anything for a penny less while they'd send as many things as they wanted to the one who could take care of their business. As a result, both the seller and the buyer are happy.
It is better to praise than to belittle(贬低)when you want o achieve more in life.
